Statues in Piazza della Signoria

The most famous statue is, of course, Michelangelo´s 'David'. The original is now in the Academia Gallery. Sculpted in 1504 it was outdoors in the Piazza until 1873. It was comissioned by the city of Florence as a symbol of democracy. Just as David fought against Goliath, the Florentines saw themselves as combatants against the Medici. The statue ewas carved by Michelangelo from a single piece of marble which had previously been used - earliest recycling we know about? It stands 13 feet tall and weighs 6 tons. It is a most impressive sight.

The Grand Duke, Cosimo 1st, subjugated all of Tuscany under his military rule. This staue dates from 1595.

The Neptune fountain from 1575 of the Roman sea god surrounded by water nymphs commemorates Tuscan naval victories.
