The Arc de Triomphe ...

..stands alone in the middle of Place de Gaulle, a huge roundabout with 12 avenues radiating out from it. Drivers need to be VERY alert to stay clear of circulating traffic.
The arch was ordered by Napoleon to commemorate the Grand Army. It was begun in 1806 and took 13 years to build. It commemorates the greta wars fought by French armies. In the centre is a constant flame on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Every day a ceremony is held to remmeber those who losttheir lives fighting for France.
